Catherine wheels

A Catherine wheel is fixed to a support and spins as it produces sparks. Correct mounting and space to rotate are essential.

Mount securely and allow free rotation

Read the instructions on your particular wheel before setting up. Designs, fixings and required distances can differ.

Use a suitable, secure support

Follow the mounting instructions supplied with the wheel. Use the specified fixing and a firm support that will stay stable during firing.

Check it can turn freely

Before lighting, check that the wheel can rotate freely without catching on the support or surrounding objects. Follow the instructions for tightening the fixing.

Keep the surrounding area clear

Allow space for the wheel to rotate and throw sparks. Keep the area around and below it clear of people and materials that could catch fire.

Light and move away

Stand to the side. Follow the product instructions. Light one firework at a time, at the end of the fuse and at arm's length, using a suitable taper. Never stand or lean over it. Step back immediately. Use the spectator distance on the label.

Never try to restart a wheel by hand

Do not touch or push a wheel that has been lit but is not spinning. If a firework fails to light, or stops unexpectedly, keep everyone away from the firework and do not attempt to relight it, unless the manufacturer’s instructions specifically describe using a supplied reserve fuse. Follow that procedure exactly. If unsure, leave the firework and contact the retailer. Use a supplied reserve fuse only if the manufacturer’s instructions permit it. Wait at least 15 minutes and any longer time stated on the label, then follow the full procedure. Never relight the original fuse or attempt a repair. If there is no permitted reserve-fuse procedure, keep everyone away and contact the retailer the following morning.
